Ministry to review panic button on online transport apps

Panic button in online transport apps needed to ensure drivers, passangers safety.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi would review the panic button feature in the online transport application. The panic button feature can be used both by drivers and passengers to ensure their safety.

"It isn't final yet. We are combining recommendation from Supreme Court and our own effort," said Budi on Wednesday (Oct 17).

Budi said Supreme Court dismissed a lot of things from Ministerial Regulation (PM) 108. Thefore, he used Law No. 22/2009 on Road Transport Traffic, where the position is above PM.

"We will carry out the law that has been applied. There are also certain morals that must be fulfilled," Budi added.

Previously, Director General of Land Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation planned to create panic button on online taxi application. "For minimum service standard, there must be safety, so maybe we will make panic button or its kind," Budi added.

Budi explained panic button would be useful when drivers or passengers were in danger. He expected the proposal of this feature will no longer be rejected by any party. The panic button aims to be safety effort, considered a number of criminal cases on online taxis.
