ドラマ「おっさんずラブ -in the sky-」

 「おっさんずラブ -in the sky-」は、2019年12月21日(土)放送の第8回でついに結末を迎えた。主人公・春田創一(田中圭)が黒澤武蔵(吉田鋼太郎)に告白し、視聴者の歓喜と戸惑いの感想が入り乱れる事態に。

 これまでの関係性を整理すると、まず春田は副操縦士・成瀬竜(千葉雄大)のことが好き。しかし成瀬は整備士の四宮要(戸次重幸)に思いを寄せていて、四宮は春田に好意を抱いている。そして黒澤の意中の相手は、四宮と同じく春田。登場人物全員が片思いをしており、それぞれ告白したもののバッサリ振られていた。

 今回のエピソードでは、黒澤がパイロットの引退を宣言。この事実を聞いた春田は、これまでにないほどの動揺を覚える。そんな中黒澤は、春田、成瀬、四宮の3人を土手に呼び出し、突然「黒澤杯相撲大会」を開催。まず最初に挑んだのは四宮で、ぶつかり合いながら「私は後悔しています!」と本音を吐露した。これまでの関係を失うくらいなら告白すべきではなかったと思いの丈を叫ぶ四宮。黒澤は彼を投げ飛ばし、「人を好きになった自分を否定してんじゃねぇよ!」と叱咤する。

 続く成瀬や春田にも、相撲を通して様々なアドバイスを送った黒澤。この相撲をきっかけに、春田たちは少しずつ先に進んでいく。例えば四宮は春田への失恋に踏ん切りがついたようで、成瀬に「俺のどこがいいわけ?」と質問。四宮の方から歩み寄ろうとしており、その後成瀬にキスされて焦る姿を見せるなど、2人の関係は急接近した。

 そして春田は、一度振った黒澤に告白。黒澤への想いが恋愛感情なのか自分でも整理できていないようだったが、「キャプテンのこと、好きになってもいいですか?」と伝えた。これに黒澤は「嘘だぁ…」としばらく悩んだ末、「まるー!」と回答。2人で抱擁すると、黒澤は「はるたん…」と呟く。

 2人の告白シーンに、視聴者からは「この2人エンドは予想外!」「とうとう黒澤キャプテンがはるたんって言った!」「やっぱり黒澤さんははるたん呼びじゃなきゃ」「やはり今回も吉田鋼太郎はヒロインだったか!」といった声が。かなり錯綜した恋愛劇だったが、然るべきところに“着陸”したようだ。

Bridges, stadium roofs and airports: This Phoenix company makes sure steel and other materials won't fail - AZCentral

When Alexander Zuran III says his company "has your back," it's not an overstatement.

In a sense, Phoenix National Laboratories also is watching to ensure that your arms, legs, children, pets, vehicles and much more remain safe.

The company tests the steel and other materials that go into bridges, buildings, factories, power plants, mining installations, pipes, street lights, stadium roofs and more. Many are high-profile construction projects across the country.

Using X-rays, ultrasound, radar and other diagnostic tools, including some borrowed from the medical industry, the company's technicians look for fractures, corrosion and other problems that could cause fatal accidents if not corrected.

"Welds and joints are the main things that drive our industry," Zuran said, adding that corrosion can be a problem even in dry desert climates like that of Arizona.

Tests on giant California bridge

For example, Phoenix National Laboratories has been testing and inspecting much of the steel being used to construct the Gerald Desmond replacement bridge at the port of Long Beach, California. The structure, with a 200-foot-high clearance over the water to accommodate larger cargo ships, will be the nation's second-tallest cable "stayed" or supported bridge. The $1.3 billion project is set to open in mid-2020.

Many of the bridge's components were built at a Stinger Bridge & Iron factory in Coolidge in central Arizona, where technicians and engineers from Phoenix National Laboratories inspected and tested parts for the past two years, prior to their shipment to California.

"Most or nearly all testing and Inspection is done on the bridge sections fabricated at the shop, before each component is shipped to the site," said Rick Viduka, business development manager for Phoenix National Laboratories. "Erection crews do not want to make any repairs at the site — too expensive."

Focus on welding

As another example, Phoenix National Laboratories staff spent 18 months testing tubing and other apparatus at the massive Solana solar plant constructed near Gila Bend about a decade ago. Testing focused on storage tanks, pipes, generators and more.

"We X-rayed a percentage of 100,000 welds there," Zuran said.

Other company projects have included testing on the light-rail connection to Sky Harbor International Airport, a concourse expansion at Los Angeles International Airport, the retractable roof of the Brewers baseball stadium in Milwaukee, the new steel dam at Tempe Towne Lake and bridges above the new South Mountain Loop 202 freeway.

So too for work on the Phoenix Convention Center, State Farm Stadium in Glendale (home of the Arizona Cardinals) and the expansion of Phoenix Children's Hospital.

Paul Sullivan, a product evaluation engineer with the Arizona Department of Transportation, said the agency has used Phoenix National Laboratories on various projects including testing pads for bridge bearings, which provide support between a bridge's surface and its supporting pillars. The company helped correct a problem with the pads, Sullivan said.

In an email, he praised Zuran's staff for helping to "find the solution for whatever testing challenge we were having."

Behind-the-scenes work

So much happens behind the scenes that the public rarely thinks much about testing — as long as nothing goes wrong. 

"The average person does not realize the large amount of testing and inspection that is required during construction, to accomplish this safety goal," said Viduka.

Around 10% of the items that Phoenix National Laboratories tests aren't in compliance and would be at risk of failing if not corrected, Zuran said.

Relatively recent innovations include more digital and electronic testing, which have largely replaced filmed X-rays of the past.

"We're making sure this stuff is made correctly," Zuran said. "And we're out there testing to make sure things are safe for public use."

Potential bridge issues

As an example of the amount of testing that is needed, a 2018 analysis of federal transportation data estimated that nearly 54,300 of the nation's 612,700 bridges were structurally deficient, largely due to advanced age. Americans drive over a potentially hazardous bridge on the federal highway system every 27 miles on average, according to the report by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association.

(Arizona, however, had some of the nation's safest bridges, with a moderate 1.8% deemed deficient, according to the report. Rhode Island, West Virginia and Iowa had the highest percentages of unsound bridges.)

Phoenix National Laboratories, a privately held company, has about 32 engineers, technicians and other employees, sometimes pushing that to around 50 when temporary help is needed. Other testing entities operating in the Valley include Team Industrial Services and Western Technologies — both part of larger companies.

Besides testing, Phoenix National Laboratories also performs after-the-fact failure analysis when structures collapse, fall over, break, crack or whatever. It also oversees a certification program for welders. When it comes to corrosion, for example, most problems occur at welds.

"We literally run 500 welding tests," Zuran said, depending on the material, its size, thickness, position, the welding process used and other factors.

Inspections in lab or field

At the company's Phoenix laboratory south of Sky Harbor International Airport, many of the tests involve samples of pipes, tubing or other material shipped in from projects around the nation.

Phoenix National Laboratories, which generates around $6 million in annual revenue, works with businesses as well as government agencies such as ADOT. About one quarter of the work is conducted at its laboratory, with rest in the field at construction sites, bridges, buildings or elsewhere.

Testing services are constantly in demand, regardless of how the economy is faring. 

"When the economy is slow, we do more maintenance and repairs," said Zuran. "But I never remember not being busy."

Why US Steel Stock Underperformed Peers in 2019 - Market Realist

  • U.S. Steel stock (X) has underperformed peers so far in 2019. Notably, it’s the only leading US steel name that’s trading with a YTD (year-to-date) loss.
  • X has had a roller coaster journey under Trump’s presidency. While the stock rose sharply after Trump’s surprise win in the 2016 presidential election, it has had a dismal run since then.

U.S. Steel stock

U.S. Steel stock is down 15.1% this month taking its YTD losses to 38.1%. The stock fell a whopping 48% last year as well. Incidentally, all US steel stocks plunged last year despite President Trump’s Section 232 tariffs. Meanwhile, in 2019, X is the only stock amongst the top five US-based steel companies to trade with a YTD loss. In this article, we’ll explore why X stock had a terrible run in 2019.

Decoding X’s underperformance

To be sure, US steel stocks had a rough ride in the first three quarters of 2019 as domestic steel prices plunged. With underlying metal prices plunging, one can only expect US steel stocks to follow suit. Now, given X’s relatively higher financial and operating leverage, it tends to rise or fall more than its peers.

Apart from that, the company’s aggressive capital expenditure plan didn’t sit well with markets. The company announced a new round of capital investments into its existing plants earlier this year and the stock plunged. These investments, which are on top of its ongoing asset revitalization plan, would only add to the cash burn in 2019 and 2020. At a time when US steel prices are weak, markets are also concerned over X’s financial standing amid the expected cash burn.

Does U.S. Steel really have a strategy?

Last year, X restarted two blast furnaces with a lot of fanfare. This year, it curtailed two US and one Europe blast furnace. Earlier this month, it announced more cutbacks to its iron making and steel operations. In May, it doubled down on the capex plan even as steel prices were falling. Now, as steel prices have shown signs of stabilization, it has cut down on its aggressive capex plan.

In my view, X management has been reactive and not proactive to macro developments. Incidentally, while U.S. Steel went overboard with plant restarts and investments after Trump’s Section 232 tariffs, AK Steel (AKS) looked at the long-term strategic picture and permanently closed its Ashland Works blast furnace this year.

Cleveland-Cliffs (CLF) announced the acquisition of AK Steel and might use the facility to produce pig iron. CLF’s DRI (direct reduced iron) plant is also expected to come online next year. DRI and Pig iron would help CLF tap into the raw material demand from electric arc furnaces that produce the bulk of steel in the US. Again, there was no stopping U.S. Steel from pursuing opportunities in DRI and pig iron. However, it is CLF that took the lead.

X expects negative EBITDA in Q4

After following US steel prices lower in the first three quarters, X stock showed some strength in October and November. It was looking strong in December as well. But its fourth-quarter guidance changed the scene. The company expects to post a negative EBITDA in the fourth quarter. This would be the first quarter since Q1 2016 when X would post a negative EBITDA.

While steel markets were in a bad shape in Q4 2019, there weren’t as bad as 2015 and the early part of 2016. Even still, X’s management might need to do some fire fighting in its fourth-quarter earnings call to reassure investors.

Even the big bull caved in this year

Overall, Wall Street is quite bearish on X stock. It does not have a “buy” or equivalent ratings. Ten analysts have given it a “hold” rating while the remaining six analysts polled by Thomson Reuters have given X a “sell” rating. The stock’s mean consensus price target represents a further downside of 10%.

Incidentally, in September, Michael Gambardella of JPMorgan double downgraded X stock from “overweight” to “neutral.” Gambardella has been amongst the most bullish analysts covering X stock. Read US Steel ‘Thriving’ No More as Big Bull Caves In for more analysis.

Meanwhile, many critics have questioned Trump’s steel tariffs amid frequent layoffs in the industry. Earlier this month, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross defended Trump’s Section 232 tariffs.
