Arson team investigates fire at Schenectady's STS Steel - Times Union

SCHENECTADY - Arson investigators are searching for clues after a fire late Tuesday caused damage at STS Steel, the metal fabrication company located along Erie Boulevard.

Details about the extent of the fire were not yet clear, but the Schenectady Arson Task Force says the fire started at about 10 p.m. on New Year's Eve.

STS Steel is located next to Rivers Casino and Resort and one of the few hold-over businesses that remain since the construction of the sprawling casino complex and nearby condominiums and hotels.

STS Steel is a long-time business in the city and for years was one of the only companies operating on the land that was once home to the American Locomotive Company. The company, known as Alco, once gave the city's the first half of its moniker as "the city that hauls and lights the world."

STS Steel occupies several buildings including a factory where Alco once built its locomotives. The company is known for fabricating steel girders and other items used in the construction of buildings and bridges. It's steel has been used in a number of local projects including the expansion of St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, the reconstruction of several locks on the Erie Canal, and the Center for Environmental Sciences and Technology Management in Albany.
