Jeff Chisholm didn’t need an elaborate scheme to get his Steel-High girls basketball team on a positive track. When the Rollers are loose and up-tempo, well, the rest takes care of itself.
On Friday, the Rollers added an attention to rebounding, which quickly eroded East Pennsboro’s chances to outlast the visitors.
Forward Deoshannae Hughes scored 23 points and slashing guard Jalasia Hull added 21 as Chisholm’s Rollers erupted for 21 third-quarter points and decked the Panthers 63-35 in Enola.
Steel-High actually began its climb with an 18-4 advantage in the second period, one sparked by Hull and the Rollers’ transition game. East Pennsboro suffered nine turnovers in that eight-minute surge, fell behind 30-16 at halftime and never caught up.
The Panthers allowed too many second-chance opportunities, perfect for Hughes down low, and were unable to recover downcourt on breakouts, which Hull had plenty.
Steel-High (8-4, 4-1), still tucked neatly behind Trinity near the top of the Mid-Penn Capital Division, turned in a 51-28 edge in rebounding. Hughes’ double-double including 11 rebounds while freshman Sa’Aja Bradley-Cross yanked down 12 boards.
Mandy Roman’s 13 points paced East Pennsboro (5-5, 3-2).
STARS
Following a solid first period from both sides, Steel-High’s defense led to some easy buckets and a 13-0 run to open the second. Hull sparked the surge, scoring 11 of her total. A short jumper by East Pennsboro’s Izzy Morgan at 3:55 left in the half finally snapped the eruption.
Seconds later, however, Hughes buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key, and Steel-High took a commanding lead into the break. The Panthers would get as close as 34-21 on Morgan’s triple midway through the third.
The Rollers responded with six straight via a Alay’za Mayo deuce, two free throws by Hughes and another Mayo bucket underneath. Mayo came off the bench for six points and six rebounds.
Olivia Taverna chipped in nine points for East Pennsboro.
GAME-SEALING MOMENT
The Panthers’ game plan unraveled in the second stanza as the Rollers forced nine turnovers. In fact, East Pennsboro totaled 16 turnovers in the opening half.
THEY SAID IT
“A lot of rebounds, outlets and fast breaks. We played better D today. The crazy thing is we won by 28 and [forward Aziyah] Rorie didn’t score today. I think what we did today was start to send a message to a few teams that we’re starting to get on all eight cylinders. We want to be in a nice seed when it’s all said and done.” – Steel-High coach Jeff Chisholm
